Grossglockner High Alpine Road
 

Location: Start in Fusch (approx. 40 km) Open: Beginning of May to beginning of November, daily from 5:00 to 22:00 (15/06 - 15/09) in the low season from 6:00 to 20:30. Toll for cars: € 28

At 3,798 m the Grossglockner is not only the tallest mountain in Austria, it is also one of the highest mountains in the Eastern Alps. The pyramid shaped Grossglockner is slightly infront of the smaller Kleinglockner (3,770 m) and inbetween them is the so-called Glocknerscharte.

The first ascent of the mountain took place in the year 1800. Other expeditions were not always so successful. The Pallavicinirinne is named after Margrave Alfred Pallavicini who died on the Glockner in 1886.

Oskar Kühlken, author of the "Glockner Book" described the myth of this mountain with the following words: " The Grossglockner is more than just the highest mountain in Austria, the aura of an extraordinary personality shines from it. Anybody who comes within its vicinity is carried away by it."

With the construction of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road the majestic peak received a new dimension. As a popular excursion destination the mountain is, for many people, the epitome of breathtaking experiences with nature. Greatness and power are palable here, you cannot help succumbing to the fascination of the endless ice and the force of nature.
